First and foremost, I want to welcome you to the new DUBVSN sports news website. This has been an idea I’ve had for many years. So you might be asking.
“Why now?”
“What has taken so long?”
“What is DUBVSN?”
What Is DUBVSN?
Well, let’s start with what DUBVSN is. DUBVSN is an acronym for Dub V Sports Network. Until now, DUBVSN has primarily been used for a photojournalistic recap of high school sports in West Virginia. Occasionally covering middle school sporting events as well. The main sports covered were football and boys’ and girls’ basketball. Other sports, such as volleyball, baseball, softball, and soccer, were also covered but not with the same amount of attention that I was giving to football and basketball.

I would arrive at the game or match with two to three cameras and lenses. The shutter actuating as fast as the action. Thousands of photos are taken each game or match. I would then return to my office to ingest and edit the photos. And here is where I sometimes encountered a hurdle. That hurdle would be “perfection”. Editing the correct crop. Making sure the white balance was correct. IT took me some time to figure out how to properly color calibrate my monitors. Making sure each photo was exposed correctly. The editing process, which should have taken 45 minutes to an hour, began to stretch to 2 to 3 hours. And after this process was completed, the photos would be posted to social media.

These photos would be shared by parents, players, and supporters on their pages and profiles. Some individuals would credit me. Some individuals would either save the image or take a screenshot of it and post it without giving credit. That would upset me a little at first, but I eventually got over it. It comes with the territory. I had to ask myself what I am doing this for. Am I doing this solely for enjoyment? Is it for the recognition? Is it to provide a missing perspective in the local sports coverage? I had to revert to my philosophy regarding sports photography. What I was providing was a way for athletes, parents, family, and friends to relive these moments. While also providing a somewhat vanilla recap of the game or match. But in all of this, I still felt unfulfilled. That was not the true vision of DUBVSN.

What has taken so long?
I take full responsibility for the delay in the DUBVSN sports news website. Was it analysis paralysis? Was it imposter syndrome? Did I not have the time? It could be a plethora of things, but if I want this to work, I have to build this plane while flying. So that’s what I intend to do. The vision of DUBVSN is to bring more to the audience and the community than just articles, interviews, stats, and game recaps. A significant focus of DUBVSN will be to emphasize a more personal touch on the athletes, coaches, and the community. The primary source of content in spreading this will be both micro-documentaries and mini-documentaries. Several micro-documentaries were produced a couple of years ago—no better time than now to begin producing new ones.

Why Now?
DUBVSN has been a concept of mine since the fall of 2017. And it wasn’t until five years later, in the fall of 2022, that DUBVSN officially launched. The vision I had of DUBVSN was to bring a different approach to the sports journalism scene here in West Virginia. I would say up until this point, it has been somewhat of a failure. But now is the time to right that wrong. With the DUBVSN vision platform, new media will be introduced that have yet to be seen on the platform.
